Hotels & Food
The closest hotel to the Capitol Complex is the Best Western Plus Capitol Ridge. You can walk to all the buildings--State Office Building, Senate Office Building, the Capitol, & more. It has a restaurant Peddlers Pub. As of this writing (summer 2019) rooms have Microwave & Refrigerator, Desk, Non-Smoking, Full Breakfast, High Speed Internet Access. Free parking & you can usually leave your car there all day.
Visit St Paul has a list of downtown hotels.
For the past several years, the MLA LegWork Committee has organized informal dinners after the evening briefing. You are invited to join your fellow library advocates for dinner following the Legislative Briefing at the Capitol. Reservations will be handled for you; cost for dinner is on your own. There is usually a registration form so we know how many people are coming & where.
Beverages & light snacks are available at the evening briefing or other day-before event.
Beverages & light snacks are available in L'Etoile du Nord for the Legislative Day morning briefing (and as long as they last through the day.)
You are on your own for lunch on Legislative Day. Some suggestions:
- There is a cafeteria in the lower of the MnDOT building (just south of the State Office Building.) https://mn.gov/admin/government/buildings-grounds/building-management/buildings/mnsenate.jsp
- The Capitol has the Rathskeller Café in the basement near L'Etoile du Nord. Vending machines near the café offer cold drinks and snacks. http://www.mnhs.org/capitol/visit/dining
- There are other restaurants within walking distance. http://bit.ly/2hfAG8c
- The blog Heavy Table food blog visited every restaurant on the Green Line. Some are walking distance or a quick train ride from the Capitol. http://heavytable.com/category/stories/green-line-checklist/
In 2019, a post-Leg Day Happy Hour was at 7th Street Food Truck Park. This gave people a chance to unwind, share their stories, and relax after a long day. It was well-attended--about 20+ people--considering the snow had started! All food & beverages were on your own. Look for plans for a similar event at future Legislative Days.
